Financial Consequence of Tree Injections:
The background noise of a thousand other cafeteria voices diminishes—The Director and suits sitting at a nearby table talk about tree injections. Voices gradually heighten. I should recognize them but don’t. Neckties, different shades of red, burgundy, maroon, and crimson, provide subtle clues of importance, making it easier to decide who is who. “Why pull up the pavement?” one asks. “Why inject nitrogen into the soil? You could buy a thousand seedlings for the price of injecting an old tree.”
“And dig up more pavement to plant the remaining nine hundred ninety- nine?” another asks. “Fewer parking spaces would force another layoff.”
“Make the smaller parking lot sound like a new opportunity.”
